The practice of Massage Therapy is the assessment of soft tissue and the joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain. Techniques are used to maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function and decrease pain.
The soft tissues include muscle, skin, tendons and associated fascia, ligaments and joints. These structures are what holds the bones of the body together and creates movement at the joints.
The use of Massage Therapy affects all the systems of the body, in particular, the muscular, circulatory, lymphatic, immune and nervous systems.
A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) (MT) is a regulated health care professional. Our governing body in Ontario, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) sets our Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. We are regulated under the Regulated Health Practitioners Act and the Massage Therapy Act.
The CMTO requires Massage Therapists to pass a certification exam that consists of a written and practical portion and upon completion we are able to hold a valid registration to practice Massage Therapy. As a RMT we take continuing education credits (CEUs) that keep us up to date in regards to treatment protocol and new techniques that will ultimately benefit you.
Massage Therapists have completed many hours of education at accredited schools and have extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, neurology, assessment, manual techniques, and pathology.
Many of today's health problems can benefit from Massage Therapy because the manipulation of soft tissues affects so many of our bodily systems.
Massage treatments aim to:
Decrease lower and upper back pain
Improve athletic performance
Increase circulation
Increase range of motion
Decrease Headaches
Massage Therapy is also effective in the control of chronic or acute pain, stress reduction, and in creating a sense of relaxation and well-being.
During your initial visit a health history form will be completed by yourself and reviewed with your RMT. Specific health questions will be asked with all the information being private and confidential. Usually an assessment is required to allow the therapist to fully evaluate the condition you are presenting with.
Health history forms are a requirement set by the Regulated Health Practitioner's Act (RHPA). The form provides the therapist with valuable health information which is necessary to develop a highly effective and individualized treatment plan for each client.
We will always inform you of what areas need to be worked on and obtain informed consent prior to assessment or treatment. Always know that you have the right to stop the assessment or treatment at any time. You are in full control.
Most health insurance plans cover Registered Massage Therapy. It’s suggested that you check with your policy for coverage and whether or not your plan requires a doctor’s note for treatment.
At Davisville Massage Therapy we have many different payment options. We accept visa, debit, cheque and cash. Payment is received at time of treatment and a receipt will be presented to you that can then be sent to your health insurance company for reimbursement.
